Reading List

This will be an area where I will keep lists of books I’m reading/using or have recently aquired and hope to read.

  • Holy Bible (English Standard Version)
    • My preferred English translation of the Bible. The Concordia edition is great as it includes the Small Catechism and other related material. I am eagerly awaiting the ESV Self-Study Bible.
  • Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia
    • The Old Testament in Hebrew. I’m realizing that Hebrew is a beautiful language. To read the creation account in Hebrew is amazing.
  • Book of Concord (Kolb-Wengert Edition)
    • The premiere academic edition of the Book of Concord. I currently have Dr. Charles Arand, who translated the Apology to the Augsburg Confession, as my professor for Lutheran Confessions I. This edition is filled with excellent footnotes and resources. Highly recommended to anyone interested in studying the Lutheran Confessions
  • Sources and Context of the Book of Concord
    • Great book that gives English translations to key texts that relate to the Lutheran Reformation and the Lutheran Confessions.
  • Hammer of God
    • Probably one of the most influential books that I have read in the last five years. I can’t do the book justice in describing it. If you haven’t read this book you need to. Now.
  • Lutheran Service Book
    • The new hymn book of the LCMS. I grew up using TLH (The Lutheran Hymnal) and loved it. Using LW (Lutheran Worship) in college was a shock. While there were good parts of LW, such as new hymnody there were many downsides such as poor “updates” to old hymns. Thankfully, a great many of these time honored texts have been restored. This hymnal has taken the best from TLH and LW and combined it with new hymns to make a wonderful new hymnal for the Church. Using it every day in chapel at the seminary is a wonderful experience.
  • On Being a Theologian of the Cross
    • Short book that deals with Martin Luther’s Heidelberg Disputation, a key event in the life of the Church.
